For more than 25 years, Project Piaba has been researching the home aquarium fishery of the Rio Negro. Very early on it was discovered that this fishery was not only sustainable, but it was the principal driver for creating value for the environment. Changes in the global market present challenges for the Amazonian industry to adapt and survive. It is feared that if the fishery is allowed to collapse, resident fishing community will be forced to shift to destructive practices for the basis of livelihoods. Project Piaba is developing and implementing strategic adaptations with the goal of preserving the fishery, and maximizing socioeconomic and environmental benefits of the aquarium trade.
